Privacy Policy

AIRs Network (“AIRs”, “we”) is a verified, invite-quality professional network for the IIT community. Privacy is a product feature here, anonymity and k-anonymity protections are built into the platform itself. This policy explains what we collect, why, and your rights.

You must be at least 18 years old to use AIRs. We do not knowingly process the data of anyone under 18.

What we collect

Account basics, when you sign in with LinkedIn we receive your name, email address, and profile photo.
Profile details you provide, campus, department, hall, graduation year, current role and company, society tags, “looking for” tags, and an optional phone number.
Verification data, your institute (.ac.in) email or roll number, used only to mint your Verified badge. These are never displayed to other members.
Content, posts, forum threads and replies, messages, jobs, events, applications, feedback, and reports you create.
Compensation entries, salary data you voluntarily contribute. Individual entries are never shown to anyone; only aggregated medians appear, and any group smaller than the k-anonymity threshold is suppressed entirely.
Usage signal, one record per member per active day (no page-view, location, or behavioral tracking), plus push-notification subscriptions for devices you enable.
Invites, if you joined through an invite link, we record who invited you.

How we use it

To run the network: feeds, messaging, jobs, events, clubs, and notifications you’ve enabled.
To keep it trustworthy: verification, moderation of reported content, and blocking.
To improve it: aggregate activity metrics (how many members were active, not what you individually browsed).
We do not sell your data, show ads, or share your information with third parties for their marketing.

Anonymity protections

Content posted as “Verified Anonymous” never exposes your identity to other members or to moderators, moderation happens against a one-way hashed identifier. Salary data is only ever shown as aggregates over groups of sufficient size (k-anonymity).

Direct messages, and the one time we read them

Your messages are private. Nobody at AIRs reads a conversation, and there is no way for us to browse one.

The single exception is a report. If you or the other person reports a conversation, we read a short window of it, the last few messages up to the moment Report was pressed, so that we can judge what was reported. We do not see anything either of you sends afterwards, and we cannot open a conversation that was never reported.

That window includes messages that were deleted. We are telling you plainly because “delete” removes a message from the app for both of you, and it is fair that you know it can still be read if the conversation is later reported. It works this way for one reason: without it, anyone could send something abusive, delete it, and leave the person reporting it with nothing to show. A photo deleted from a chat is gone for good and cannot be recovered by anyone, including us.

Where your data lives

Data is stored with Supabase (database, India region) and served via Vercel. Verification emails are delivered via Resend. Sign-in is provided by LinkedIn (we receive only the basic profile fields above). These providers process data on our behalf and don’t use it for their own purposes.

Your rights

You can edit your profile anytime, control what’s public (e.g. “looking for” visibility), unsubscribe devices from push, and block members.
Access & correction, request a summary of the personal data we hold about you, or correction of anything inaccurate.
Withdrawal, take back the consent you gave at sign-up, from Settings → Your consent, in the same two taps that gave it. What that does is set out below.
Erasure, delete your account (below). Withdrawing and deleting are different choices: one stops us, the other erases you.
Nomination, you may nominate someone to exercise these rights for you if you’re unable to.
We respond to rights requests within 15 days, and always within 90. If you’re not satisfied, you may escalate to the Data Protection Board of India.

Withdrawing your consent

Settings → Your consent → Withdraw my consent. It takes two taps, the same two that gave consent when you joined, and it takes effect immediately.

When you withdraw, we stop processing your data: we sign you out on every device, lock your account so nothing of yours is being used or shown to anyone new, and delete your push-notification subscriptions so nothing reaches you. We keep a dated record that you withdrew, because we have to be able to show when consent was given and when it ended.

Withdrawing deletes nothing. Your profile, your posts and your messages stay as they are, so that agreeing again puts you back exactly where you were. You cannot use AIRs while your consent is withdrawn: consent is what allows us to run your account at all, so there is no half-way state where the app works without it. Signing in again brings up this notice, where you can agree once more, or delete your account outright without needing to get back into Settings.

If what you want is your data gone, use Delete account below. That is a separate right and it is the one that erases.

Deleting your account

Settings → Delete account erases your profile details, your photo, your compensation entries, your verification records, your institute email address, your saved preferences and your notification subscriptions. This is immediate and cannot be undone.

Anything you wrote that other people are part of stays, with your name removed from it. Your posts, comments and poll answers remain and are shown as coming from a deleted account. Messages you sent stay visible to the person you sent them to, because deleting them would remove one side of someone else’s conversation without their say. Neither can be traced back to you afterwards.

As required of intermediaries under Indian law, we retain a minimal registration record (name, email, sign-up and deletion dates) for 180 days after deletion, then erase it.

Security & breaches

Access to personal data is protected by row-level security and role-based controls. If your personal data is ever involved in a breach, we will inform you without undue delay and report it as required under Indian law.

Grievance Officer

Anuroop Anand Perli, reachable via the in-app Feedback form (Settings → Send feedback) or grievance@airscommunity.com. We acknowledge complaints within 24 hours and resolve them within 15 days. Complaints about content showing a person in a private act, nudity, or impersonation are actioned within 24 hours. Unresolved data grievances can be escalated to the Data Protection Board of India.

Independence

AIRs Network is an independent community platform built by and for students and alumni of the IITs. It is not affiliated with, operated by, endorsed by, or sponsored by any Indian Institute of Technology, IIT Kharagpur, the IIT Council, or the Government of India. “IIT” and institute names are used solely to describe our members’ institutions and belong to their respective owners. Member verification is performed by AIRs Network, not by any institute.
